A day of in-depth study, discussion and discovery dedicated to the world of wine amphorae and amphora-aged wines enlivened the Argillae winery.
Amphorae are a fascinating and complex subject, characterised by an extraordinary variety of producers-artisans, materials, firing techniques and levels of porosity.
The masterclass: comparing wines aged in amphorae
The day began with a highly educational masterclass led by our selector Gianluca Telloli: 12 wines aged in amphorae selected from the Proposta Vini catalogue were compared in an in-depth technical and stylistic analysis.
These included Primo d'Anfora 2022, which was analysed and discussed in a context that allowed for the exploration of different interpretations of ageing in amphorae.
From the cellar to the kiln
After a lunch dedicated to Umbrian culinary traditions, the day ended with a visit to the Sirio Amphorae kiln in Città della Pieve, one of the very few Italian companies specialising in the production of wine amphorae.
Here, craftsman Fabrizio Ratti accompanied participants on a journey of discovery through the materials, production processes and stages of a long and complex activity, which requires around two months of work and a high level of craftsmanship.
It was an intense day that reminded us how, behind every amphora and every wine, there is time, skilled hands and a continuous search for authenticity.
