The other side of Nero d'Avola

Friday, 27 June 2025 Francesca Negri, Friday, 27 June 2025 (0 minutes read)

The prince of Sicilian reds, Nero d'Avola, with its intense aromatic profile, capable of giving life to fine, structured wines with a powerful, harmonious and warm character, represents the soul of a unique territory, embodying its history and traditions.

After centuries of use as a blending wine, Nero d'Avola has asserted itself in all its singularity and exceptionality, becoming one of the symbols of Sicilian viticulture: elegant, refined and with great character, it gives its best not only in red wine but also in all its other expressions, thanks to its ‘histrionic ability to transform itself while maintaining its main structure and without betraying itself’ as Francesca Curto, at the helm of the Ispica-based company of the same name, emphasises.

The excellence and peculiarities of Nero d'Avola are, in fact, expressed in an exceptional way even with unconventional vinification thanks to its fine natural acidity. Examples are Feudo Disisa's Grecu di Livanti and Curto's Extra Brut Rosè sparkling wine, both part of our catalogue.

    Feudo Disisa, Grecu di Livanti

In the hilly area of the Monreale (PA) countryside stands Feudo Disisa, for almost two centuries owned by the Di Lorenzo family, now in its fifth generation. In this territory, guardian of ancient traditions and historic vineyards, Grecu di Livanti was born, whose name is inspired by an ancient popular legend that tells of a ‘Greco di Levante’ who arrived in Sicily, following a magic text, in search of Lu Bancu di Disisa, a treasure kept in the feud of the same name.

This Nero d'Avola rosé matures in stainless steel tanks for six months and then 60 days in the bottle before revealing all its freshness and pleasantness. Pale pink in colour tending to onion skin, the nose releases a very fruity bouquet in which floral notes of rose petals and red fruit aromas emerge. In the mouth it is full, persistent and harmonious and goes well with fish dishes and appetisers such as swordfish carpaccio, octopus and potatoes, mezze maniche allo scoglio, grilled tuna and seafood salads.

    Curto, Spumante Extra Brut Rosé

Dedicated to the cultivation of vines since as far back as 1670 in the Ispica area, between the provinces of Ragusa and Syracuse, the Curto family counts among its main objectives the enhancement of the exceptional quality of Nero d'Avola, its authenticity and elegance, as skilfully demonstrated with the Extra Brut Rosé sparkling wine.

A pure Nero d'Avola, this Extra Brut comes from grapes cultivated using the spurred cordon method on medium-textured, highly calcareous soils that give it a particular minerality. After ageing for at least 24 months in the bottle, it shines in the glass with its rosé colour and fine, persistent perlage. The nose reveals the characteristic aromas of this variety, including fragrant, fruity notes and hints of strawberries and mulberries. The taste is crisp and savoury, with an acidic note and perfectly balanced fresh fruit sensations on the finish. Intriguing throughout a meal, it is perfect with caviar, tuna roe, processed fish, cured meats and fine cheeses.
